Ginkgo biloba also known as Maidenhair has been used medicinally for thousands of years. Today, it is one of the top-selling herbs in the United States. Ginkgo is one of the oldest living tree species. The extract of ginkgo leaves is used as a folk remedy. In traditional Chinese medicine, the seeds of the ginkgo tree are used. Ginkgo is a prescription herb in Germany.

Ginkgo is used for the treatment of numerous conditions. Available evidence supports ginkgo for managing dementia, anxiety, schizophrenia, and cerebral insufficiency (insufficient blood flow to brain). This ancient herb acts to enhance oxygen utilization and thus improves memory, concentration, and other mental faculties.

I use Ginkgo to improve blood circulation.  I have been told by doctors for years that I have poor blood circulation but I was never given any solution.  Since this condition never gave me any medical issues, doctors were not concerned.  Over the years I searched just out of curiosity about the symptoms of poor blood circulation, never came across hair loss.  I came across Ginkgo biloba though and I decided to give it a try.

I have been experiencing hair loss for years along with dry hair, mostly at the end. Within a few days of using Ginkgo biloba I noticed my hair loss was decreased significantly that I noticed right away and my dry hair was gone. I noticed the correlation but part of me still doubted it and I thought it was just a coincidence and I will go back to losing lots of hair in a few days. I was just having a good hair day. I took it for a few more weeks while searching the web for any connection between hair loss and Ginkgo biloba.

I never found any study about the benefit of Ginkgo biloba for hair. Yet I was still experiencing good hair days and my dry hair and hair loss were almost gone. So to test it out as I was really curious, I stopped taking Ginkgo biloba. Within a week, my hair loss was back and my dry hair was back as well. Again I started taking Ginkgo biloba and again within a few days my hair loss stopped and my dry hair was gone.

I am not sure if my experience is unique. Hair loss is caused by many different medical conditions and what works for one person might not work for someone else. My hair loss was due to many reasons.  I was vitamin D deficient as well as iron deficient. I was losing hair in handful and lost almost 50% of my hair. After taking vitamin D and Iron my hair loss was reduced big time but I was still losing. Ginkgo biloba seems to work to almost totally stop my excessive hair loss. Now I loss within the normal limit.

I know how frustrating hair loss is. It is devastating, especially for women. I wanted to share my experience. I am hoping it might help some of you.

Please remember that Ginkgo has some side effects so take with caution. Better yet, talk with your doctor.
